Dr. Whaley is a licensed clinical psychologist and a licensed and nationally certified school psychologist. She has over 10 years of experience providing psychotherapy and psychological assessment services to children, adolescents, and adults within schools, mental health clinics, and hospitals. She specializes in addressing issues related to attachment, trauma, emotional and behavioral problems, and academic achievement. Some of the therapeutic approaches that inform her clinical work include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based practices, strengths-based, solution-focused, and relational approaches. Using an integrated approach, she blends elements from different approaches in order to tailor treatment to address each client's unique needs and goals.

In addition to her direct work with clients, Dr. Whaley has an extensive research background studying the effects of trauma on development. Prior to moving to the Upper Valley, Dr. Whaley worked for several years on the Minnesota Longitudinal Study of Risk and Adaptation, the National Children's Study, and various studies with the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress. She has published in the areas of parent-child attachment relationships, child abuse and neglect, academic achievement, developmental psychopathology, children and families' responses to disasters, and the effects of deployment and combat injuries on military children and families.

Dr. Whaley received her PhD in both child psychology and school psychology from the University of Minnesota. She completed her clinical psychology internship and fellowship at Hennepin County Medical Center and her school psychology internship at Wayzata Public Schools in Minnesota. She also spent 2 years pursuing advanced training in contemporary psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Dr. Whaley has taught graduate and undergraduate counseling and psychology students at the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin. At Counseling Associates, she serves as the Director of Intern Training.
