My teen can talk to me about anything. Why would talking to a counselor help?
It's different. We're glad you have an open communication with your teen. A counselor that is objective and professionally trained can create a safe, neutral place free from expectation and judgment.
My son/daughter doesn't want to go to counseling. What can I do?
There are a few different approaches. Parents are welcome to come in themselves to brainstorm ideas and approach issues from a parenting and family perspective. It is also helpful for a teen to know that this is not a forever proposition. They can come in and give it a try for a few sessions. It is also important for teens to know what's in it for them and not feel that they're being brought in to be fixed. Counseling is less effective when it is a power struggle.
My son/daughter went to counseling when they were younger and they think it will be just the same.
Teen counseling is different from child therapy. Our experienced teen counselors are skilled at meeting adolescents where they are at. Therapy is a collaborative process and the teen will be active in setting his or her own goals. The activities of counseling are based on child's age, interests and strengths.
